I’ve seen a few places online where women, specifically pro-choice women, are just viscious in their attacks against Bristol Palin, Sarah Palin’s teenaged pregnant daughter, for her decision to marry the father of her unborn child. Why? First of all, why is it any of our damn beeswax what Bristol does? She is not her mother any more then I am mine.
Truly, what’s the worst that could happen for young Bristol? She could wind up a statistic, yet another young, failed marriage that ends in divorce. It could turn into a loveless marraige that she, like thousands of other people around the globe, will hang on to for the sake of the child. Or, just maybe, she could wind up like thousands of others who married their high school sweetheart and find their “happy ever after.”
Marrying young is nothing new. To decry this marriage as a “shotgun” wedding, or declare that she is being forced to marry because of her mother’s political career ignore the fact that significant pressure would have to be applied to the boy and his family as well. The truth is, we are not privy to Britsol or her fiance’s thoughts. We were not there in the Palin family meetings to hear how this decision came about. What we hear are those women who, looking through the lens of their own prejudices and experiences, have decided that this would be bad for them or their children. Most of those hating on Bristol are Democrats who see this as a political strategy. Why? Why does it have to be a political strategy? Why can’t it simply be a couple of kids in love, one of whom has a mother in politics?
It’s because Bristol has choosen life. She has choosen to give birth rather then have her kid sucked into a sink. The pro-abortion folks just don’t know how to respond to this family. Afterall, if Bristol can have the kid and be happily married at a young, why, other girls might try it too. Can’t have any of that. There is even a doctor in Canada worried that the exsistence of baby Trig will lessen the amount of abortions of Down-Syndrome kids! (via Spunky)
In a discussion about this very topic, I’ve been informed that because I support Palin, I’m in favor of “wire hangers and back-alley abortions.” I’ve been called “anti-choice”, because apparently if you are against one choice, you are against them all. I’ve also been lumped in with the fringe extreme anti-birth control bunch, while at the same time being told not to lump all “pro-choicers” together with the extremist “pro-abortion” crowd. Irony much?
Truth is, McCain is right when he says Roe V Wade was a bad legal decision. There was no legal support for what the Justices did on this one, check into it. And for the record – neither McCain nor Palin will actively work to overturn Roe V Wade. If the reactionary pro-aborts would just read McCain’s platform, they’d see he doesn’t want to end abortion, he wants that decision to be turned over to the individual states, where it belongs. “…returning the abortion question to the individual states.” This is McCain’s way of placating the pro-life radicals and staying in the middle ground where he loves to be. Do I agree with him, no. But am I a single-issue voter? No. I can see past this issue.
Much as I hate it, Roe v Wade is, unfortunately the law, despite it’s iffy legality. What McCain/Palin will do, is appoint strict Constitutionalists judges, who will interpret the law, not make stuff up out of thin air, and who will not enforce “international law” on us. I don’t live in Germany, German law has no place presiding over me, yet there are judges today who are doing just that, using other country’s laws to rule on Americans. Not cool. That is what they will try to stop.
But regardless, I’ve been informed that I am a bad feminist, or not a feminist at all because I am pro-life. I guess the “sisterhood” is only open to those who support abortion. You know what? Count me out.
Roe v. Wade should be remanded back to the States and go through the political process. For people who don’t keep up on politics, they get “scared” every four years by the pro-abortion crowd who tries to scare them about what a “new” administration would do to their “rights”. Never mind the fate of the innocent child, who has all of the DNA for the person he/she will become at the minute of conception. These are also the same people who just know that the Republican President is going to take away their social security checks! That hasn’t happened, either.
As to Bristol Palin and her fiance…I saw a picture of him at the convention and he has Bristol’s name tattooed on his ring finger…yep, that really sounds “shotgun” to me.
Gov. Palin will be a wonderful VP…BTW, she’s a member of a group “Feminists for Life” ~ women who believe that women should not be held back for whatever they would like to obtain in their lives, be it motherhood, politics, or both! They also believe in the sanctity of life.
I didn’t see the pic of the tattooed ring finger… That’s really sweet. It’s very true that’s so much of the hate is plain ignorance with a voice/blog.
