Riches & Children

Proverbs 27: 23-24
Know well the condition of your flocks, and give attention to your herds, for riches do not last forever; and does a crown endure to all generations?

That’s the verse from my devotional this morning.  I chose to skip ahead tot he finance section because well, I’m about to have to FACE (Financial Awareness Continually Empowers) my own finances as we prepare to take the next step towards home ownership.

The obvious meaning of the verse is financial.  Take care of your family’s needs, make a budget, watch your spending.  Plan ahead for the future, be it college funds, retirement, or even home ownership.  Work out your budget to allow you to accomplish your goals and provide for your “flock.”

I see another meaning also.  Maybe it’s the SAHM in me, but I read “riches do not last forever,” and immediately think of my children.  We’ve all heard it, the cliche that SAHMs don’t get paid in dollars and cents, but in hugs and kisses from her babies.  Well, it’s true.  While money would be nice, watching my children grow has it’s own rewards.  On the other side, they won’t be this young much longer.  Eventually, the hugs & kisses will be fewer and farther between, and “Wuv You Mama!” will not last forever.  Heck, my oldest son is already drawing pictures of the girl he wants to marry.  In fact in just a few short years, I will find myself the mother of 3 brooding teenagers.  If I don’t plan for that…  If I don’t build the foundations for a strong relationship now, all hell will break loose when they are teens.
