Gator and I had some pretty deep discussions on Vaccines & Zero Tolerance.  Then we were joined by JadedByPolitics for a discussion on Nationalism.

My take on vaccines & the autism argument is a bit more fully fleshed out over on my personal blog here.  Full disclosure – all of my kids ARE vaccinated. That was my & my husband’s choice.  If I could go back in time, knowing what I know now about vaccines, I would still vaccinate my kids, however, I’d request single shots and a longer vaccination schedule.

I really wanted to get more into a discussion of the idea of Parental Freedom & the hypocrisy of those who want government out of our lives, except when it comes to vaccines. One of the biggest points of confusion for me is when the same crowd that says we can’t trust the government on anything, says we should totally trust the CDC (a branch of government) on everything vaccine-related.

But let’s all be honest here.  The Vaccination Battle is just one more front in the Mommy Wars.  Bottle Vs Breast, SAHM Vs Working Mom, Attachment Vs Cry-It-Out, Vax Vs Not.  It all comes down to the freedom to parent the way we choose, and accepting the responsibility for those decisions.

Anyway, after that discussion, Gator asked if Zero Tolerance policies were responsible for the circus surrounding Clock Boy.  I lamented the lack of attention being given to the ACTUAL winners of the Google Science, like Miss Olivia Hallisey.  This 16 year old girl developed a cheap, fast test for ebola.  That’s right. E-friggin-bola! Yet all the press coverage surround the Google Science Fair was sucked up by Clock Boy – who likely didn’t even invent his stupid, poorly-designed clock.

After that, we talked with JadedByPolitics about Nationalism.  Is it a good thing, despite it’s negative connotations?  Listen in to find out.
