“I love you Mommy,” My 5 year old son says with his arms wrapped around my neck. It’s 8:30pm, and I’m tucking him into bed. This is one of my favorite times of the long day, not because my children are headed to bed, but because I take a few minutes to talk with each of them about their day as they ready themselves for sleep.
“When I grow big, I would marry you… But I can’t.” BigBoy says in a very matter-of-fact way. “Why not?” I ask, because I want to hear his answer. He’s made me curious to know how his young brain works.
He heaves a great big sigh, as if he is incredibly disappointed in me, and says. “Because Daddy already did.” His mouth forms a frown, and I can’t help but laugh. I tried to tell him that one day he would grow up, and meet a girl that he would love more then he loves me, and that he would marry that girl. He swears to me it will never happen, not because he will never get married, but because he could never love anyone more then he loves me.
” ‘cept God. I love God more.”
I think my heart exploded. These are the moments that make Motherhood so worth it.
Makes me want to have a child. Thanks for sharing this moment Lorraine. It helps reassure us that there are good moments in this world and that good people are raising more good people.
Thanks Colleen!
