This year, we’ve decided to start our own holiday tradtions. This was an idea sparked by my desire to celebrate with just my small family for once, and birthed when at the FLYfest, I heard Kelly say, “Ever feel like you just want to spend the holidays with your own family, in your own home, etc… Its not about that one day. Celebrate with your family whenever you get the chance.”.
We opted to have our own Thanksgiving day dinner, the day after. We decided to turn the friday after into our day to set up the tree, decorate the house, and celebrate thanksgiving with just us and the kids. And I must say, it went pretty well. It was nice to relax, and have fun decorating the trees with the kids. And it felt great to be able to eat dinner without worrying about my kids behavior. After all, it was just us.
This particular idea worked so well, we already have a new tradition in the works for Christmas. We will spend out Christmas Eve as if it were Christmas Day at our house. The kids will get to open their gifts, and we’ll have a special dinner of Carne Asada. We’ll take all day if we want to, instead of pushing the kids to hurry through the opening of the gifts so we can race to gramma’s house and do it all again. Then Christmas Morning, we can wake up, and just relax as we get our breakfast and pack the car for the trip to Gramma’s house. This plan should take about 80% of the stress out of our Christmas. Plus! this will be the baby’s first Christmas! I really don’t want to rush through that. *S* I will let you know how it works out for us. *S*
