Ok, so there’s been a bit of drama over the NY Times piece in the style section about Blogher.\u00a0 I understand the anger about being relegated to the style page simply because we’re women.\u00a0 I get that.\u00a0 What is just really frosting me, is the phrase I keep seeing used as a validation of blogging mothers.\u00a0 The wording differs blog to blog, but the meaning is the same.<\/p>\n
Most of us<\/em><\/strong> [female bloggers] are actively and agressively courted by corporations and PR firms.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Really?\u00a0 most<\/strong> of us?\u00a0 Am I that much in the minority?\u00a0 I know I’m not an A-list blogger, heck I’m not even on the B-list.\u00a0 I think I’ll join Kathy Griffen on the D-list.\u00a0 But seriously, “most of us<\/strong>“?\u00a0 Don’t know about you, but I surely do not have PR firms filling my inbox.\u00a0 No one is sending me schwag to review.<\/p>\n
I know, it’s a little thing.\u00a0 But really, it just heaps doubt and guilt upon us lowly D-listers, or at least it does on me.\u00a0 I get it.\u00a0 I don’t write as much as I should to be a more popular blogger.\u00a0 I don’t participate at blogher.com as much as possible.\u00a0 But I can’t possibly be in the minority here.\u00a0 I’d wager that its more likely the other way around – that there a select group of chosen bloggers who are courted because of their A-list popularity, while the rest of us are ignored.<\/p>\n
Let’s face it, success like Dooce<\/a> is extremely rare.\u00a0 Turning your blog into something you can be paid to do is not easy.\u00a0 Most of us blog because we want to write, to connect somehow.\u00a0 I have a theory that blogging today is like the backyard fence of yesteryear.\u00a0 I can remember my mom talking with our neighbor over the fence.\u00a0 These days, I don’t know much more about my neighbors then their names, if that.\u00a0 But I can tell you all about my favorite blogger<\/a>, and I know at least a few of my readers personally.<\/p>\n
So how about it fellow bloggers?\u00a0 Is there a wider gap than I thought in the BlogHer\/female blogging community?\u00a0 Or am I in the pitiful minority, just like high school?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
