a LOST weekend

I’m totally hooked on this show LOST. and I got DH hooked too!!! Since DH had some time off this past weekend, and we chose to use it to watch the entire first season of LOST. (bought it on sale at amazon.com!) Took us 3 days to get through all 6 DVDs, but we did it! and now I’m all caught up! So consider this your warning! If you haven’t seen it, or don’t want to know what’s going on yet… Stop reading now! If you wanna know my take on this awesome show…. keep reading! *S*
See, I figured out that while I thought LOST was in Season 3, it’s really still in season 2. I figured out why this is while watching the extras on the bonus DVD that came with Season 1. Seems that LOST was the first ever show to be picked up on an outline. Like they were still writing the script when they were casting! Several characters, like Sun, Jin, and Hurley, weren’t originally in the conception, but after meeting the actors, roles were written just for them. I saw on the boards over at abc.com that Jorge Garcia (Hugo “Hurley” Reyes) has said the reason for so many repeats is that although the air dates are only 7 days apart, it takes at least 10-12 days to film an episode. so you can see where they run out of episodes quickly and have to repeat while they continue filming… Also, they said on the bonus features, that nobody would do the show unless the island itself were a character…. so the island does have some kind of power, that has to be assumed to have the story make any kind of sense….

Anyway! some observations about the show to date…. I’ve noticed that everyone in the crash has trust issues. I mean serious trust issues. By the end of the weekend, I find myself wishing the lostaways would hold a meeting a la AA…

“Hello. My name is John Locke. I was once a buffoon, who allowed my sperm donor of a father and whack job of a bio-mom sucker me into giving up a kidney for my sperm donor. I didn’t obey doctor’s orders to rest after losing a kidney because I couldn’t believe I’d been so guilble to allow myself to give up a body part for a guy who didn’t care one whit about me while I was a child. As a result, I wound up in a wheelchair. Yup, you heard me. That wheelchair we had on the beach… remember?? That was mine. Upon crashing on this island, my legs suddenly worked. I don’t know why, but I believe the island has done this. By the way, I saw the thing in the jungle. trust me, we are all here for a reason. I must go now, it’s been 107 minutes, and I need to push a few buttons in the hatch so we can all survive another day.”

LOL I know… If these guys would ever come clean to anyone, they might all explode, right?

I also notice that all the Lostaways are very protective of kids… Like Saywer refusing to complete a con because a kid is involved. Kate is very tore up about the death of her high school hunny, not just cuz he, you know, died, but even more cuz he had a kid. Michael was about to rush off to switzerland or whereever to grab his kid when he got hit by a car. Now that Brian is the guy who’s raised Walt, when brian wants to back out, he tries to get brian to realize how hard this will be for the boy, and the brian is Walt’s dad as far as walt knows… when brian refuses, Michael ultimately steps up to the plate, despite the fact that his whole life will go in the can because he has no idea how to be a dad…. Claire wants her baby to have a family. She wants whats best for Aaron, even if it means an international flight to get him to the right family. Jin lays a beat down to keep the other guy from killing the mark, just because the guy has a kid…. even on the tailenders side, Ana Lucia is fiercely protective of kids due to her own miscarriage, Mr. Eko allowed himself to be taken into a life of crime to protect his kid brother. and years later he refuses to allow his underlings to kill a kid, instead declaring the kid will always remember that Mr. Eko allowed him to live. on and on….

Somehow, the kids are essential to whatever it is that brought them to island… I think that is why Claire was kidnapped. I don’t think they were injecting Aaron with anything prenatally… I think the needle claire remembers is actually for an amniocentises, to check the baby for lung maturity. I think they wanted to be sure Aaron was far enough along before they did the c-section. I think the story they told her about the infection, and Aaron needing antibiotics after birth was just that, a story, something to convince the drugged-up pregnant teen to give Aaron to them. They convince her that he will need something she can not currently provide. And in her drugged state, it never occurs to her to ask why they can’t take her to the states or even back to Australia…

I think Aaron and Walt will be instrumental. Remember Locke’s big speech to walt about the “Light and Dark” of backgammon being opposed to each other? It’s undeniable that Walt has some kind of power, kinda a stephen king like thing. Do I believe Walt “created” the polar bears? no. I think the polar bears were there either because of Dharma’s experience, or because of a zoo transport flight that crashed (and the losties wont find the wreckage for year because of how far inland it is), after all, the nigerias crashed there, Rousseau’s team was drawn there, who know what else is on the island? I do feel that with the plethora of chinese symbols and writings (jack’s tattoo, Boone’s shirt, Hurley and Claire’s necklaces, etc) that Aaron and Walt will become like Ying and Yang. Hence the psychics warning that claire’s goodness must be an influence in Aaron’s life. Aaron is supposed to become the good side, meanwhile the “Others/Dharma” will work on Walt, to make him the bad side. Will they succeed? Will Walt ultimately turn Evil? I don’t know. I know that Claire claims that Rousseau’s daughter seems “different, good” despite Alex having been taken only a week after being born. You’d think that the “others” would have turned her by now…. maybe that’s why they need Walt? Alex didn’t turn the way they had hoped. Walt’s been mostly ignored as a child and has a lot of anger built up toward his Dad and mom and adopted dad. some of that anger was starting to wash away, so they needed to grab him up when they did so they could try to feed off that anger to turn him to the dark side.

Look for Rousseau’s daughter to become a key figure to unraveling the mystery. afterall, she was the first child (that we know of) to be taken. I don’t think Danielle was supposed to survive whatever disease was given to her crew. I think her immune system responded better and fought off the sickness because she had just given birth… and I don’t think the island knew that she was capable of murdering the whole crew, including her husband to save her own life. The island forgot to calculate one thing… A mother’s perserveance. for 16 years she has searched for her child. I think the “Security System” in the jungle is out there looking for her. She wasn’t supposed to survive past birthing her daughter, let alone 16 years of solitude!

I also think that Charlie will be a key figure in unravelling the mystery. Look at it this way… Charlie the junkie was a con man, a sinner, a thief, anything for a fix. Charlie the Junkie is who the island brought. Heck, the island even made sure that an entire plane load of Heroin, Charlie’s drug of choice, was there, just waiting for Charlie to inhale it. (BTW, bit of trivia, Dominic Monaghan is actually snorting brown sugar in the drug scenes on the show!) In order to keep Charlie out of the way, the island needed to keep him high. so it brought the plane load of drug running nigerians to crash, and leave enough stuff to last charlie a long, long time. Long enough to keep him out of whatever plan they have for Aaron, since he is the one who could mess it all up for them. The island didn’t count on Locke going all religious and insisting on helping Charlie the way he did. Nor did it count on Charlie having the willpower to kick the habit. Straight Charlie is mildly religious, caring, and a good soul, much like Claire. Straight Charlie will be key to keeping baby Aaron safe and protected. After all, Claire’s psychic claimed that Claire was the only one who could raise the baby. that danger surrounded the child and the Claire’s goodness and pure soul MUST be an influence in the baby’s life to ensure that he grows up safe and good. Straight Charlie is as much a pure, good soul as Claire. Maybe the “couple in LA” was actually supposed to be Straight Charlie and Claire. I know people flipped out on Charlie a few episodes back when he kept having dreams that he needed to save the baby. But I think that a few episodes down the line, we will discover there was a plot to sneak in and grab up Aaron that night. Charlie foiled the plot by grabbing Aaron and heading for the water to baptise him. the fire he set as a diversion deterred the “Others/Dharma” from coming near the camp, esp after the entire camp wound up surrounding Charlie and the baby. I don’t believe that Charlie was using, like Locke thinks. Esp when in “the Long Con” epi the next week, we see saywer offer Charlie a statue of drugs, and charlie refuses, stating he only wanted Locke and Jack to get what was coming to them. I think Charlie is clean, and he’s tired of being pigeonholed as the junkie who doesn’t know anything. that’s why Saywer was able to convince him to help… Charlie is kind of like Luke Skywalker. Junkie Charlie is Dark Side Luke, and Straight Charlie is Jedi Skywalker. Either way, in the end he will always be there to save his friends.

Sayid is another player. I believe Sayid knows more about everyone else than anyone, even the viewer realizes. after all, he was an itelligence officer. yeah, I know military intelligence often don’t go together… but he is always tinkering with stuff, kinda like Gilligan’s Professor… who’s to say he doesn’t have the whole camp bugged?? or at least the hatch. He is definitely a human lie detector.

All that said, I kinda think this show is over analyzed. I think the show is a unique blend of Star Wars, Giligan’s Island, Castaway, and just about any Stephen King book. I think the producers are having fun connecting everyone’s background (which we seen time and again how somehow the lives of each lostie overlap, sawyer is arrested while Boone is in the Police deptarment. Jin sees Hurley on the news, Hurley owns Lockes Box company, Kate’s not-dad is one of the soldiers handling Sayid. on and on.) And I think they just flat out get a kick out of putting the numbers in odd places, just to feed the viewers who are addicted to the show, and have plenty of time to digest it frame by frame to find the tinest of details. Of course, on the other hand, each tiny little detail could be key to figureing out the mystery, who knows? only the writers and producers!
