Besides all the politicians vying for office, this year\u2019s ballot will also have Question 1 \u2013 a proposed amendment to the state constitution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe proposed amendment confirms an individual\u2019s fundamental right to an individual\u2019s own reproductive liberty and provides the State may not, directly or indirectly, deny, burden, or abridge the right unless justified by a compelling State interest achieved by the least restrictive means.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actual text of the Amendment<\/a> as proposed is as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ARTICLE 48.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That every person, as a central component of an individual\u2019s rights to liberty and equality, has the fundamental right to reproductive freedom, including but not limited to the ability to make and effectuate decisions to prevent, continue, or end one\u2019s own pregnancy. The state may not, directly or indirectly, deny, burden, or abridge the right unless justified by a compelling state interest achieved by the least restrictive means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proponents of the amendment<\/a> say it is needed to make sure that Maryland remains a safe harbor for people who want an abortion, no matter who is in office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opponents say that the language is far too broad. \u201cReproductive Freedom\u201d is not defined anywhere in the amendment or existing MD law, meaning this amendment has the potential to be twisted in any number of ways, including violating parental rights to be notified about their children\u2019s healthcare decisions<\/a>. Others fear it will have implications for religious freedom<\/a>. Some also cite the section forbidding the legislature from making any regulations and say that this will hamstring any attempts to protect women\u2019s health and safety<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A vote of \u201cyes\u201d on Question 1 will support adding the Amendment to the State Constitution. A \u201cno\u201d will reject this version of a State Constitutional Amendment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is important to know that <\/em><\/strong>abortion at any stage<\/em><\/strong><\/a> is already completely legal in the state of MD, and this amendment will not change that.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
